Romantic wedding to take place at foot of Wrekin
A woman who spends five days a week cleaning a historic hotel in Telford will be making sure it is sparkling this weekend as she ditches the uniform and puts on a wedding dress.
Jo Hagans, Deputy Head Housekeeper at The Buckatree Hall Hotel, has worked there for four years and only met her husband-to-be after winning prizes on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway television show on ITV.
Despite both living in Wellington, Jo, 32, and fiancee Phill Groves, 29, only met when Jo spent her winnings on a holiday to Greece in 2006.
She said: “I put myself forward for the show and got picked out of the audience to play the game where you answer as many questions as you can in two minutes – then decided to gamble.
“I went there as a single mum-of-two and had nothing to lose, I won all the prizes on the board and had some cash to book a holiday with friends.
“So it was in Greece that I met Phill, when we came back we were best friends for a year and a half, then it grew and we haven’t looked back since.”
The couple will be married at the hotel, which lies at the foot of the Wrekin, on Saturday (June 28).
And the former Blessed Robert Johnson school pupil said she knew exactly where she wanted to have her wedding, which has been in the planning for two years.
She added: “I know from working at The Buckatree that the venue is fantastic, the scenery is great for photographs and all the staff are great, it is a family-run business and a great company to work for.
“I will be working up until Thursday so I will have to trust my colleagues that everything will be set for Saturday, but I am sure it will.
“I am really looking forward to being there, having all my friends and family around – hopefully the weather will be good.”
Miss Hagans will be given away by her son Liam Cannon, 15, and one of her bridesmaids will be daughter Georgia Cannon, 12.
They will enjoy the day with 75 people and have an evening party with 120 people.
Phill, a former Charlton school pupil who now runs his own painting and decorating business, added: “I can’t wait for the day, it is all planned and we are just waiting for it to happen now.
“The Buckatree is a great venue and I had no objections when Jo suggested it, it is going to be nice for her to be waited on rather than looking after all the guests.
“She has such an attention to detail and is used to making sure the hotel runs smoothly though, so I am sure she will still be trying to look after everyone.”
Wayne Jenson, General Manager at the 62-bedroom hotel, said it was a great honour to be able to host Jo and Phill’s wedding.
He added: “For one of our members of staff to choose to get married here is a great endorsement of what we do.
“Jo is here most days of the week, knows everything about the business, and wants to make it the centre of her big day.
“We will be pulling out all the stops for them, I am sure it will be an enjoyable day.
“The hotel is looking great following all the money that has been invested into it and we are delighted that Jo and Phill will be benefit from it, we are sure everyone will be impressed.”
The hotel is owned by Grant Moon who bought it from the Matrix Group in 2010.
Since he took over a new gym and function room have been built and the bar, restaurant, banqueting suite and bedrooms have been refurbished.
