Be Scam Aware – Scam proofing Telford’s Elderly

Be Scam Aware – Scam proofing Telford’s Elderly

Local at-home care provider, Home Instead Senior Care, has recently partnered with national scam awareness charity, Think Jessica, and with the help of Staffordshire Police, has launched a public education programme to raise awareness of mass market scams and their effects on the elderly.

As part of the campaign, the team at Home Instead Senior Care in Telford hosted a free public senior fraud awareness workshop in Gnosall. The workshop saw Home Instead share information with attendees on the scale of the problem and the most common scams targeting the elderly as well as what to do if they have fallen victim to scammers.

Two members of the Staffordshire Police team also attended the event to provide further information, support and advice regarding local scams.

Home Instead has also put together a ‘Senior Fraud Protection Kit’ which contains information on the most common scams, tools to help assess the risk of an elderly loved one, plus really useful checklists to help seniors take practical action to lower the risk of becoming victim to a scam.

Organiser of the workshop, Sally Carter, said, “Through the workshop we have had a lot of success in branching out into the wider community and we hope that we’ll be able to keep local people better informed and armed with the knowledge to correctly recognise and respond to scams and scammers. The workshop had a very positive impact on the attendees and we’re delighted to be doing our bit to keep elderly people in our local area safe.”

PC Karl Green of Staffordshire Police added, “These types of scams have very serious consequences for the elderly who can suffer devastating emotional distress plus loss of confidence and trust which can lead to a loss of independence. The workshop was very helpful and did a great job of informing the attendees on how to be more scam aware. There was some information in the workshop that even I was not aware of.”
